Clear sponsorship and tax boundaries

Important sponsorship and tax information for Backfield users.

External payment links

Teams should use a payment or donation link owned by the school, booster club, league, nonprofit, club, or other authorized organization. Do not route team sponsorship funds through a personal account unless the organization has explicitly approved that process.

Donation vs. sponsorship

Some payments may be donations, some may be sponsorship or advertising purchases, and some may not be tax-deductible. The correct treatment depends on the recipient organization, benefits provided, receipt language, and applicable law.

Receipts and records

The payment provider or recipient organization—not Backfield—should issue receipts, confirm deposits, manage refunds, and maintain accounting records. Backfield can help teams track sponsor interest and fulfillment status.

Sponsor clarity

Public pages and sponsor kits should state exactly what recognition is offered, who receives funds, how payment is made, and who to contact with questions before a sponsor commits.

Before launch

  • ✓ Choose Zeffy, Givebutter, Square, Stripe Payment Links, or another approved organization-owned payment path.
  • ✓ Verify payout ownership before publishing.
  • ✓ Confirm receipt language with the organization.
  • ✓ Paste the public HTTPS payment link into the campaign editor.
